Cefdinir (Omnicef)

What is cefdinir used for? 

Cefdinir is an antibiotic that can be used for a variety of infections. Typically, cefdinir is an option if your child has a penicillin allergy. 

  • Ear infection

  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis (Group A Strep) 

  • Pneumonia 

  • Urinary tract infection 

  • Sinus infection 

  • Skin and soft tissue infection


What are the most common side effects seen with cefdinir? 

  • Diarrhea


Contraindications

Cefdinir shouldn’t be taken if your child has had an anaphylactic reaction (hives or swelling of the tongue) to cefdinir or other medications that are similar to cefdinir (they are a drug class called cephalosporins). 


Tips & Tricks to administer cefdinir

If your child is having difficulty taking cefdinir (liquid or tablets), it can be mixed in some foods or beverages. Please keep in mind that if a medication is mixed with food or drink, it should be taken immediately. The mixture should not be saved or consumed later.


Cefdinir can be mixed with: 

  • Any food or beverage based on the child's preference  (can also help with upset stomach).


  • Wait 2 hours before or after antacids (ex: famotidine, TUMS, pantoprazole, lansoprazole), or iron supplements (ferrous sulfate) are given.


How to store cefdinir

  • Cefdinir tablets and oral liquid should be stored at room temperature. 


Breast feeding considerations 

  • Cefdinir is generally not present in breast milk if being taken by the mother. 

  • Cefdinir is generally considered as compatible with breastfeeding.
