What is docusate used for? 

Docusate is a stool softener that can typically be used for constipation.


What are the most common side effects seen with docusate? 

  • None that are recorded. Docusate is not absorbed by the body. Its sole function is to soften stool to help alleviate constipation.

Docusate doesn’t have any listed contraindications.


Tips & Tricks to administer docusate

If your child is having difficulty taking docusate, it can be mixed in some foods or beverages. Please keep in mind that if a medication is mixed with food or drink, it should be taken immediately. The mixture should not be saved or consumed later.


Docusate liquid can have a bitter taste. To help, consider mixing in: 

  • Formula

  • Milk

  • Fruit juice

Docusate should be taken with fluids to help it work more effectively. 


How to store docusate

  • Docusate can be stored at room temperature. Do not freeze or store in environments of high humidity or light.

  • Docusate is considered as compatible with breastfeeding.
